The Bastei Beisl in the Stubenbastei, right in the heart of downtown Vienna, is considered an institution in its own right. For almost four decades now, the guesthouse has represented a popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike. The guest book of the Scheiflinger family features numerous entries by well-known artists, politicians and athletes.
Our task was to give the existing rooms a contemporary flair, while also preserving the charm and Viennese style for which the establishment is so loved by its regulars. What catches the eye straight away is the open feeling of the space – archways as dividing elements were removed and a uniform ceiling height was created. This makes the restaurant appear significantly clearer and larger.
Dark oak in a fishbone pattern combined with structured tiles that draw inspiration from the ceramic typically found in traditional Viennese apartment buildings decorate the floor. The bar, tiled in rusty orange tones, blends charmingly into the overall appearance and simultaneously exudes a modern ambience.
Images telling the family history of the Scheiflingers along with sepia photographs depicting the old Vienna, the 1st district, decorate the walls. Soft sage green and beige nuances in the textiles along with the use of solid timber for the tables and benches characterize the traditional, down-to-earth values of this Viennese establishment. Upholstered cushions on brass rods as backrest elements impart a sense of coziness and beckon guests to sink in and relax. Brass elements are a recurring theme and elegantly round out the concept.
